Discussion includes the care of comforters as well. MAKING HOMEMADE COMFORTERS When making homemade comforters most prefer to make them with one hundred percent cotton. This is  because of the "price, durability and selection" (Homemade Comforters 2002, PG). For a toddler or crib-sized comforter the standard amount of fabric needed will be 56 squares with each  square being 6 1/2". The back of the comforter will be 42"/54" back. When using 45" fabric and, for example, three different colors, one needs to purchase 26"  and then cut 18 squares of each color. For comforters made to fit a twin sized bed, first it is important to know how much "drape" there should  be. If making comforters for a bunk bed, for instance, there should not be much drape. If that is the case, the comforter would be about 48" x  84". For a normal twin sized bed however, with the drape and all it would be 60" x 84" because a twin sized mattress measures 36" x 72" and  that would give it plenty of drape. For the bunk bed sized comforters there should be 92 squares with 31 squares of each. For the twin, it will be  140 squares and 48 squares of each color. The comforter that is homemade can then be stuffed with 16-weight organic cotton and tied it with 12 strands of yarn.  The organic cotton is nice since its all natural. It is very important to remember to pre-wash all cotton materials. Also when sewing the 6 1/2" squares  you need to use a 1/4" seam allowance. According to one handy homemaker, "The last few parts will probably take you as much time as the rest combined.
