California gold rush, Horace Greely "wrote in his weekly New Yorker that If you have no family or friends to aid you . . . turn your face to the
Great West and there build up your home and fortune" (Kahl, 1999). More than a decade later in 1851, Indiana newspaperman John Soule gave us a phrase still used
today: "Go West, young man" (Kahl, 1999). The details marking the differences between then and now are dramatically different of course, but
the sentiments are largely the same. As New York draws those who aspire to theatre and Nashville those who seek fame in country music, so do Los Angeles and
Las Vegas attract those seeking excess in their lives, with or without the fame of a movie or music career to finance it. The entertainment industry has encouraged this
movement, which in turn has influenced the entertainment industry. Ultimately, the relationship has influenced development of life in the Western part of the United States.
