    the country have held intrigue and have drawn people to it since the time of its discovery and population by those of European descent. About the time of the  California gold rush, Horace Greely "wrote in his weekly New Yorker that If you have no family or friends to aid you . . . turn your face to the  Great West and there build up your home and fortune" (Kahl, 1999). More than a decade later in 1851, Indiana newspaperman John Soule gave us a phrase still used  today: "Go West, young man" (Kahl, 1999). The details marking the differences between then and now are dramatically different of course, but  the sentiments are largely the same. As New York draws those who aspire to theatre and Nashville those who seek fame in country music, so do Los Angeles and  Las Vegas attract those seeking excess in their lives, with or without the fame of a movie or music career to finance it. The entertainment industry has encouraged this  movement, which in turn has influenced the entertainment industry. Ultimately, the relationship has influenced development of life in the Western part of the United States.  The Movies It was in the 1920s that Hollywoods film industry was born. These were the days of  silent films, and they were days of great economic success. The first World War was over, the troops were back home and back to work, and the economy was  growing as never before. It was the "roaring 20s," so named for the pace at which those making large sums of money continued to increase their fortunes. The
