    modern times. While nihilism in itself is a rejecting of customary beliefs in certain morally based beliefs, Americans seem to have gone one further to include self-indulgence as their form  of revolution. Why ought a person do or not do anything? Supposed a person, call her Tory, determines that in order to remain in college that she must take up  a well paying career as an exotic dancer. Moral realism holds that ethical principles are valid no matter what and exist independently from human choices. However, no ethical system has  won anything like universal agreement, not even ethical systems that invoke theism, or, in other words, God. For instance, natural law theories have few advocates outside the Catholic Church. The  moral nihilist has the job of showing that all these theories are false or at least implausible. One very good way to do this is to argue as David Hume  did, that there is no absolute truth except in the mind of the beholder. As such, then, moral nihilism rejects the idea of absolute morals or ethical values. After all,  if life has no meaning, what good are values? Why bother to follow a moral code? Given this, then, Torys dancing is no more doing anything ethically wrong than someone  who has decided to take up smoking, go for an extended trip to the country, or fix dinner. "What I relate," Nietzsche wrote in The Will to Power "is the  history of the next two centuries. I describe what is coming, what can no longer come differently: the advent of nihilism"(Nietzsche 1987).  According to Nietzsche, Torys predicament was foreseeable due to the way society was constructing itself.
