The expansion was planned several years ago; this one includes forming a joint venture with Subway Corporation and a Russian company  that can provide navigation through cultural barriers. The Russian economy has been improving since its collapse in the late 1990s, and the coffee market is strong in Russias largest  cities. Russia presents challenges that other international markets do not, but it also holds promise not available in other markets as well.  The Starbucks culture will be totally foreign in Russia, but its strangeness also will be refreshing. The Russian partner will need to be trained in Starbucks philosophy and explain  to Russian employees the differences they can expect to see in Starbucks approach to business and to them. The combination of Starbucks coffee and Subway sandwiches promises to be  a successful one in the Russian market. Introduction Based in Seattle, Starbucks Coffee is the leading specialty coffee retailer in America. Its  presence is nearly ubiquitous in any area in which there is sufficient traffic to support the location. It operates caf?s in malls, airports, office buildings, university libraries and hotels;  customers can expect to find Starbucks kiosks at hospitals, smaller office buildings and other places lacking enough traffic to support a full caf?. Shoppers can find Starbucks coffee in  grocery stores, and an alliance with Dreyers has placed coffee ice cream there as well. An alliance with Pepsi resulted in placing a cold bottled Frappuccino into grocery and  convenience stores. With nearly 5,900 locations in addition to its ancillary coffee-related businesses, Starbucks has been expanding internationally for some time. Its
