    independence for his country following the conflict. Consequently, Minh turned to the Chinese Communists for help in ridding Vietnam of French colonial presence. The US agree to come to the  aid of the French and this marked the beginning of American involvement in what would turn out to be a long, bloody and ultimately useless endeavor on the part of  American forces. It was a conflict that divided the country and the American loss in Vietnam was a huge blow to national self-esteem and prestige abroad. Historical scholarship has  long examined this war in order to discern precisely what happened and why. Expository writing: why it happened. During World War II, specific promises were made to Ho Chi  Minh in exchange for the Vietnamese peoples cooperation and the Vietnamese fought along side American troops in Southeast Asia during the war. However, after WWII, The US wanted to persuade  France to back American plans proposed to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) for the post-war defense of Europe (Vietnam War). As this indicates, the original reason for US involvement  was not to preserve democracy or freedom in South Vietnam, but to aid the French in regaining control of its pre-WWII colonial possession. At the time, it seemed more political  expedient to American leaders to aid the French, rather than back the people to whom the country actually belonged (Drew and Snow).
