A group perspective provides a basis for communication between family members and promotes an understanding of group  dynamics in the family setting, but does not inherently lend itself to the resolution of specific issues for individual family members. On the other hand, individual therapeutic relationships between  the therapist and family members may provide for a better understanding of individual conflicts or problems, but may not provide the necessary support to implement change in the family setting.  This assessment of the "Jones" family considers the nature of the relationships and their impact for resolving central family issues. Family Background  The Calgary Family Assessment Model (CFAM) provides a means of assessing families like the "Jones" based on three segments relative to family structure and function: the structural dimension,  the developmental dimension and the functional dimension. The following is a CFAM assessment of the background and information provided by the Joneses.  The structural dimensions of the Jones family are defined by both internal and external structure as well as their social context. The internal structure of the family  is defined as follows: Family Composition: Male/female parental dyad with four school-aged children living at home. Gender and Rank Order:  Father, John; 38; mother, Elizabeth, 36; child, Sue, 11; child, Louie, 9; child Penny, 7; child Paul, 5. Subsystem: Mother and father are in a monogamous relationship  but are both admitted homosexuals. This marital dyad, then, is complicated.
