others. Some face devastating blows such as losing a spouse or child to having to deal with debilitating illnesses. Other life challenges include addictions--which can be devastating to the whole  family--single parenthood, blended family issues and teen pregnancy. There are many social problems that exist and many people look the other way and muddle through life. It takes strength and  courage to face problems and try to derive solutions as to not be taken down by a wave of multiple difficulties. Case Study  A fictitious case focuses on Irene who has a substance abuse problem. She is 35 years old, a widow, and has a new husband. She has a six year  old daughter and thirteen year old twin teenage girls from a previous marriage. During therapy, a few significant problems are revealed in addition to the alcoholism. She is a compulsive  shopper and gambler. One of her twin daughters, Sarah, is pregnant and claims that her step-father is the father of the baby. There is a family history to suggest  that this is the truth as Richard, the stepfather, has a father who is a convicted child molester and murderer. There is also a family history of alcoholism in Irenes  family. Aside from the serious problems that plague the family, one redeeming quality is that the girls do well in school and are considered gifted.
