is especially an important topic in literature that is often looked upon from a feminist perspective. In "Madame Bovary" and "Far From the Maddening Crowd" we are given two stories
that deal with marriage in different ways. One presents us with the constricting nature of marriage and the other offers us a more detailed and independent look at marriage from
a womans perspective. In the following paper we examine the two stories separately, as they involve the theme of marriage. The paper then presents a brief comparison and contrast
of the two. Madame Bovary "Flauberts first alleged offense was the way he supposedly defaced public morals. He did this through his depictions of Emma and her love
affairs with Rodolphe Boulanger and Leon Dupuis" (Anonymous Madame Bovary: Moral Issues moralissues). Even in her youth, the character of Emma is one who appears promiscuous. "While living in a
convent at age thirteen, she was enthralled with romantic novels that were forbidden for the girls to read. These fantasies that Emma had even crossed over into her everyday life
at the convent" (Anonymous Madame Bovary: Moral Issues moralissues). In essence, Emma dreams of a life filled with romance and love. Her fascination with these novels has led her
to a place where she thinks that such fantasies can be obtained. Now, while such romance can be found, it is often tempered with an understanding and a wisdom of
what the world is really about. Emma did not have this knowledge or wisdom. Her dreams of marriage and love and romance were without wisdom and without understanding. Because
she had no real idea what love and marriage and romance were all about she became a miserable individual, trapped in her marriage. She wanted wealth and excitement. She wanted
