With the critical acclaim inherent to this type of theatrical breakthrough, it is not surprising to find that Churchills  original production was paramount to the growing awareness of escalating gender issues in the early 1980s. "Caryl Churchills comedy classic takes the 1980s by the neck and gives it  a good shake" (Top Girls). Top Girls is indicative of the prolific writers inherent ability to pursue even the complex of feminist concepts. Not unlike her myriad other  works, Churchill appeals to the innermost recesses of the viewers soul as a means by which to impart her particular and personal interpretation of the feminist critical theory. The  author has a long history of reaching out and inviting her audience to experience with her the sometimes intense and often expansive sense of feminism that is clearly portrayed within  her works, and Top Girls is no exception. "Caryl Churchills play, Top Girls, takes a cautionary path toward probable dystopia. The apparently utopian opening scene unfolds into a  grim system where women incorporate many of the negative qualities of male hierarchy" (Ammen 86).
