For example, some people claim that the mad cow epidemic was allowed to surface by negligent European governments that did not want to harm the meat industrys bottom line.  Despite problems with Mad Cow Disease, and unclean facilities, the food industry in France is not doing poorly. In fact, it helps to note that France is well known for  its fine cuisine. Still, in recent years, television news stories show the European food industry as being mired in crisis (Barnard, 2001). It is shown as being harmed by  mad cow as well as a hoof and mouth disease epidemic (2001). But the reality is that the European food industry is doing well (2001). In fact, European top  food firms have increased their positions in world markets, something that had left their American counterparts struggling to close the gap as a fragmented industry enters a new phase of  consolidation (2001). European food companies have created important positions in a variety of sectors, and for example, Frances Danone, is the largest cookie manufacturer in the  world (Barnard, 2001). It is also the largest producer of fresh dairy products and sells yogurt in the United States under the Dannon label (2001). It is further the  second-largest water bottling company after Nestle (2001). The bottling of water is a trend that is also attributable to the peoples desire for a healthful lifestyle. Diageo, along with  Frances Pernod Ricard, bought the spirits business of Canadas Seagram from Vivendi Universal recently but an earlier Anglo-French effort failed when a joint bid by Danone and Cadbury Schweppes was  made for Nabisco (2001). Danone further lost out to PepsiCo when Quaker Oats was for sale (2001). Still, French companies are in the running for the worlds premier food
