    the worst time in terms of retaining market share, in fact, they keep losing percentage points. Ford has many strengths but it also has a number of serious weaknesses.  If the company is going to survive, they must take some drastic steps to reduce their costs and also to meet consumer demands. Consumer demands right now are for fuel-efficient  vehicles. There is also a section in the consumer market who wants envrionemtnally-friendly vehicles. Both these needs can be met through one type of car - the hybrid and while  Toyota and Honda introduced hybrids to this country years ago, Ford and GM have not caught up. This suggests poor planning and lack of vision and foresight. This essay begins  with a SWOT of Ford Motor Company with accompanying comments about GM in each category. The essay presents three recommendations and selects two as the final recommendations. Ford SWOT  Strengths: * Diversity of products, e.g., Jaguar, Volvo, Mercury, Astin Martin (Bryant, 2007). GM also has significant diversity in its products, including the popular Hummer, Saturn, Pontiac, etc. Further, GM  has a number of profitable alliances, such as Suzuki and Isuzu and it has technical alliances with Toyota and Honda * Is still the second-largest automaker in the world  but GM is the largest (Bryant, 2007). * Restructuring efforts: Ford sold Hertz Rent-a-car company. GM owns Direct TV as well as the OnStar System (Bryant, 2007). GM has been  selling off companies as well, including its interests in Fiat and Subaru (Bryant, 2007). * Holds a 33 percent interest in Mazda and it controls the Land Rover SUV nameplate  (Bryant, 2007). * Involved in finance through the Ford Motor Credit but so is GM through their GMAC financial services. In fact, Ford Motor Credit is the number 1
