Meeting Gary Paulsen Gary Paulsens stories of wilderness survival and life in nature whether in contemporary times or the past are based, to some minor degree, on his  own experiences growing up in the woods of Minnesota where he hunted and fished, not for recreation, but in order to avoid starvation. For example, one of Paulsens most popular  protagonists is Brian Robeson who is a memorable character, especially in terms of the fact that prior to "Brian" and Gary Paulsen, there was very limited fiction available for young  adult males. He has a style that is unique, especially in terms of how he addresses certain topics. His childhood and young adulthood was not an easy time and  that comes through in his writing. "I had a really tough childhood. Both my parents were drunks and just hated each other. They fought and screamed and never should have  been married. I can remember hiding under the kitchen table one day and just wishing they were gone. So to me childhood was mainly something to get through alive. Now,  though, Im actually grateful for some of those early experiences. ... I learned about tenacity and independence and the willingness to fight.
