understanding of the characters as they spiral downwards into a moral descent that forms the basis of a story that starts with moral corruption and ends with murder. McTeagues mother  wanted a good future for him, she was a over worked woman who cooked for forty miners whilst his father was the manager of a mine,. As a result he  had a somewhat privileged upbringing, with hard working but responsible parents, however his father had one day off a fortnight, and here we find out that on this one day  off his father would become drunk and act like an animal.
