    In Chile, however, the politics are different. Instead of choosing from two parties from which to select their leaders, Chileans are part of a multi-party system, which can put dozens  of candidates on any one ballot. These days, Chile is a constitutional government headed up by a president who is elected by popular vote for a six-year-term. Voters have much  to choose from in Chile, however, as democracy is run on a multi-party system. However, it has been Chiles multi-party system and its various dichotomies that led to the collapse  of democracy in Chile in 1973, and ultimately led to the reinstatement of it in 1989. History and split factions Since the  19th century, when Chile declared its independence from Spanish rule, Chili has been a country with a multi-party system, with five or six major parties, and dozens of smaller ones  (Valenzuela, 2001). The only time during which the number of parties diminished was during the 1970s and 1980s, when parties coalesced and argued over two issues: military rule or no  military rule. For 17 years following the 1973 military coup, political  parties were displaced from circles of power - the only time in the history of that country that it happened (Valenzuela, 2001).  During the 19th century, the newly independent Chile was in good shape.
