Market Street Ames, Iowa 77777 Dear Sirs, Jump Start is a nutrition training and physical activity program for 8 - 12 year  old children currently in the process of being implemented in Temecula, California, in the San Diego School District. Though associated with the public school system the program receives no  school funds; I am writing to inquire if your foundation has interest in supporting this type of program. The growing problem of obesity  in America is well publicized; the problem has been increasingly evident in children for several years. Of course there are many theories and assumptions regarding the progress of obesity  in America, but two factors consistently are present in virtually every serious analysis: poor nutrition and lack of physical activity. Jump Start seeks  to break the pattern with at-risk children in the local public school system, providing before- and after school care for older elementary children that focuses on education in nutrition and  increased physical activity. There are several programs available; Jump Start will use the revised food pyramid and a collection of child-oriented educational tools developed for use with children by  the federal governments Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion (CNPP). The Nike Foundation has agreed to provide a portion of the funds necessary  to operate the pilot program at a single school in the San Diego School District. The offer is a generous one that Jump Start will accept, but additional funding  will be necessary to expand the program to other public schools. We will be contacting your office with a full request for funding
