artist that pens it. If music can soothe the breast of the savage beast, then it can be stated that poetry can tell the tale of a moral
beast. That beast, of course, being mankind. In just about any sort of literary fiction, poetry included, there can be said to be some type of universal truth, some lesson
that applies to just about everyone, using the literary devices of personification, metaphor, as well as imagery. This is true of Gwendolyn Brookss poem, Truth. The poets use
of personification comes with the introduction of the Sun as a major character. The sun is able to hammer with his knuckles as exampled in the following lines: "What if
we wake one shimmering morning to hear the fierce hammering of his firm knuckles hard on the door?(Brooks). The sun is portrayed as an entity that has been longed for,
but once it has been gained, is also feared. It is feared because it is the unknown, and it is also the realization of a dream. If one were
to extract the universal truth from this poem, it would have to be that human condition which asks mankind to be quite careful what he asks for, because he just
may get it. Since Gwendolyn Brooks is known as a protest writer, it can be assumed that she is protesting the fact that given the knowledge, the freedom, the inherent
