This will require an outline of why this study is important, the strengths and limitations as well as the definitions of the terms used and a general outline of the  problem. In this chapter we will also outline the problem of aids and consider the specific problems that this may have create for orphans in sub-Sahara Africa, set the  limits of the study and consider the constraints as well as consider how the remaining chapters may be presented. HIV, human immunodeficiency virus, is a virus that is spread  though the exchange of bodily fluids, often through sexual activity, but it can also be passed from mother to child. HIV is the condition that will lead to AIDS; acquired  immunodeficiency syndrome. This is a condition for which there is no cure, and for most countries in sub-Sahara Africa the treatment to prolong life can be very costly. AIDS shortens  the life span of a sufferer by weakening attacking the lymphocytes T Cells1. These are the cells that will usually those that fight infection, when they are impaired infections are  more able to take hold and will eventually lead to death (Weiss, 2000). There are different variations of the HIV/AIDS virus; HIV-1 and HIV-2 are the main categories for which  there are also subcategories, HIV -2 is the most virulent and also leads to the lower survival times, it is this form that is common in Sub-Sahara Africa. The  way HIV/AIDS is being dealt with in Sub-Sahara Africa is important in the area of public health. This condition cannot be seen as anything other than an epidemic and is  having a great impact on the health and general well being on millions in sub-Saharan African society.
