    determining what made some arguments successful and what made some fail. In the following examples two articles on the same topic are presented, but with varying perspectives. What comes of  this, then, is an understanding of how a good argument is waged. Homosexuality has always existed. Sometimes on the periphery, and sometimes blatantly visible. However, though homosexuals have been accepted  into nearly every other facet of American life, homosexuals serving in the armed forces have struggled for many years for recognition and protection and have continually smacked into a brick  wall of bureaucracy. Aristotle coined the terms: ethos, pathos and logos and identified them as the primary elements in a good persuasive argument. Melissa Wells Petry in her article  titled: Keep the Militarys Homosexual Ban, demonstrates all three elements in a variety of ways. Petry begins her argument with the employment of Logos, or logic. She simply states  that homosexuals have not been singled out for discrimination in the armed services. She goes on to offer that the military excludes many other categories of people including single parents,  people who have been in prison, and those who are physically handicapped. She also states that various branches of the service even discriminate based on age, height, weight, mental ability,  and so on. The notion that the armed forces have singled out gays for special exclusion is false. Next, Petry utilizes ethos to summarize and culminate her argument. She has  spent the better part of two paragraphs waging and stating her case and now, after considerable time, she has situated herself as an expert who has done her homework and  ample research. In turn, then, the reader begins to accept her analysis on the situation because of the assumed reputation. She urges the reader to believe that exclusion of
