    direction in their lives following WWI. They were a generation that seemed to have no hope for their future because their introduction into the adult world was warfare. Hemingways work  is also considered to be incredibly innovative with universal themes. The following paper examines these perspectives as seen in "The Sun Also Rises." The Sun Also Rises This  particular novel is one wherein we see the phrase or term that is often associated with Hemingways work. In the epigraph there is the statement, "You are all a lost  generation." This is a very important element when discussing the innovative asnd universal qualities of the work as well because the lost generation was a generation of people forgotten by  society. No other author had addressed this particular generation in the manner Hemingway did and as such it is innovative and universal for many people in the world at that  time. They were the results of WWI and they were people who were generally left with no direction in their life. The simple descriptive element of a "lost generation"  presents the reader with pessimistic imagery, not optimistic. It denotes that this generation will always be lost. They are not called the searching or hopeful generation, but the "lost generation."  This sets the stage for a pessimistic story, despite any optimistic elements. This sense of pessimism is also one that is very universal for everyone, or everyone who has ever  experienced harsh times and been down, can relate to a lost generation and the lack of hope in the future. And, for many people there may come moments of hope  that are always dashed to the ground in the face of reality.
