Introduction Hewlett Packard is one of the  best known companies for printers and computers and other imaging products. It position is not only financially strong, but is also seen as a good employer, being voted for as  one of the "100 Best Companies in America for Working Mothers" by the working mothers magazine (Hewlett-Packard, 2007). Additionally in Fortune magazines "Most Admired Companies in America" in 1997 it  ranked fourth (Hewlett Packard, 2007). The market for the products are both domestic and commercial, however the environment in which it operated in  for both of these markets is very highly competitive. The way in which the product is perceived had changed over the last decade. And successful companies are those which  have been able to adapt and develop in order to meet the needs of a changing environment where technology is moving fast, customer are more aware of choices and are  empowered and the there are numerous downwards pressures on price while differentiation and new ways of using technology are dominant features in the market.  This sums up the strategy of a company which wishes to be a leader rather than a second mover in the markets it works in, obtaining and then  retaining a first mover advantage (Hewlett Packard, 2008). To provide a broad range of products rather than specializing in a single market,  and to provide this to a range of people so that their own understanding and knowledge may also be increased (Hewlett Packard, 2008).
