PGtnsui2.rtf ADOLESCENTS AT HIGH RISK FOR SUICIDE  , October, 2001 properly! Hypothesis/Statement of Problem The rates for suicide among adolescents has risen dramatically.  Between 1950 and 1990, the rate of suicide increased by 300 percent among the 15 to 19-year old population. In 1997 alone, there were 1,802 suicides among teens between the  ages of 15 and 19. Adolescent males are six times more likely to commit suicide than girls. The ratio of attempted suicides to completed suicides is estimated at between 50:1  and 100:1. That means there are between fifty and one hundred attempts for every completed suicide. The incidence of unsuccessful attempts is much higher among girls than boys (Pediatrics, 2000,  p. 871). The rates of attempts and successes are low, at best. There are two reasons for this. First of all, many suicides among teenagers are attributed to accidents  - things like auto accidents, overdoses, and other accidents boys (Pediatrics, 2000). The second reason is that these kinds of data are seldom published until two or three years after  the data were collected. Since reports have indicated a continually increasing account of depression and depression is most often associated with suicides, the data is no up to date. The  most recent data are simply not available (Wagner, 1998). The issue of adolescent suicide is obviously one that demands a great deal of study and attention. One very sad  aspect of teen suicide that is reported in the literature is that many cases could be prevented. The statement of the problem, then, is: * Suicide rates among adolescents
