SA143geo.rtf  In order to explain, and take advantage of marketing strategies, in respect to higher order learning, geographic concepts may be useful. First, what is higher order  learning? Higher order abilities involve thinking, reasoning, problem solving and decision making (Bredekampm, Knuth, Kunesh & Shulman, 1992). When a child learns, it is desirable that he or she  uses these higher order skills. When toys and games and other items are marketed to appeal to children and adolescents, it is accomplished in such a way as to make  sales. Yet, toy companies and their respective marketing firms are not interested in fostering higher learning skills per se. Yet, it may be useful for those in such fields, or  compatible fields, to be aware of the use of higher order learning. The use of geography in higher order learning is also relevant. Activities engaged in by children and teens  throughout the nation, and throughout the world, are related to where they live. Children in Alaska will of course engage in very different activities than their counterparts in Florida. They  may be more prone to engage in winter outdoor activities while children who grow up in Florida will be more apt to participate in water sports or go to Disney  World. While some may think that sports do not foster higher order thinking, in some way they all do. Most sports take skill, strategy and a necessity to navigate obstacles.  Even a simple bike ride fosters a childs ability to increase his or her awareness of the immediate environment.
