    "Diving into the Wreck", "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" and "Song of Solomon". Richs "Wreck" takes the diver back into an historical environment once the diver is under  the water and surrounded by the dark sea and the artifacts. Eliots "Prufrock" wrestles with his imminent aging and what little future and time he has left while asking if  in his present and past life he has made good use of time. Morrisons "Solomon" used the circular life of her character Milkman who tries to discover his ancestry in  order to make sense of his own self identity. All the works do not focus on the time theme but use interesting elements to highlight the psychological transition of time  from present into the past or future. Adrienne Rich is known as an artist and activist who intends to use poetry as an  instrument of social change and she does this by successfully incorporating beauty, travel, memory and history into her work (Gilbert, 1997). A good example of this is her collection of  poems entitled "Diving into the Wreck: Poems 1971-1972" (1973). While it can be said that in many aspects, Rich deals with political issues in her work, an equally important factor  to her poetry is the element of history. For Rich, the "sea is another story/ the sea is not a question of power / I have to learn alone  / to turn my body without force / in the deep element" (Rich, 1984, 163) and the sundry equipment which surrounds the "sun flooded schooner" is a historical reference to  human lives which existed before in history. The power of the sea and the historical elements within it are what attracts the reader and Rich (Gilbert, 1997). Rich also
