    there was Lockerbie and Flight 800 and other tragedies on the ground that foretold impending doom. The airlines in fact were more on guard since events of the 1990s unfolded  because things became more tense in the world. Still, no one expected an attack of that size in the greatest city in the world. Since the attacks, it pays to  take a look at what might have been done in light of previous air disasters or threats as well as to look at what has happened since the fateful day.  There was the shoe bomber and several other airport episodes that had airline officials on its toes. Potential disasters were averted as suspects were attacked by officials and passengers. Everyone  is on guard today. Todays state of affairs was likely unthinkable even a decade ago as Americans went about their normal business not thinking of terrorism. Today, especially when it  comes to air travel, the state had become like Israel where there is constant fear of terrorism. Americans are no longer immune from the wrath of evil and while September  11th was a wake up call, events in the 1970s and 1980s would escalate to a world in the 1990s that seemed a little less safe. While talk of terrorism  when a passenger jet went down in Lockerbie, Scotland was in the air, no one expected the 2000s to be crippled with fear. As Americans go about their daily business,  life has changed. Airports have tighter security. People are aware of their surroundings. And things are no longer taken for granted. II. Chronological History of Terrorism in Aviation  Terrorism on commercial flights really did not get much attention until the 1960s.
