The Marine Corps have been there for the people of the United States for over 200 years,  and their devotion is unparalleled. In the following paper we present an overview of the Marine Corps, discussing history involving Iwo Jima, the benefits of the Marine Corps, the skills,  as well as an examination of an interview with a Marine. Iwo Jima "The US Marines assault on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima was a two-month affair  that succeeded only after great loss of life" (Babbitt 328). Although many fighter planes had tried to defeat the area of Iwo Jima, a major area of contention in WWII  as it involved the Japanese, it was the foot men of the Marines that succeeded in taking Iwo Jima and also the Marines who are honored with perhaps the most  famous photograph in the country, that which involves the raising of the United States flag. "When the famous photograph first appeared in newspapers in 1945, it was little more than  a grainy outline of men and their wafting flag, but for millions it captured the essence of American grit and determination. The Marines pictured were in fact in no immediate  danger, as they were only replacing a small flag planted earlier; but to an enthusiastic public, they were heroes risking their lives for Old Glory" (Babbitt 328).
