in which employers may be able to reduce those unnecessary absences. The research will take place using the concept of equity theory and the idea of employment engagement; this will
allow the subject to be approached from a negative and a positive perspective. A literature review will guide mixed method primary research where questionnaires will be made available though the
internet in order to gain a high number of results. The results with be subjected to statistical analysis and then qualitative research using focus groups will test the results from
the questionnaires. The research should create a report that will be useful to academia and industry. 2. Introduction Absenteeism can be a problem for employers incurring significant costs. The
aim of this research is to identify strategies which employers may use to reduce absenteeism and reduce the costs associated with absenteeism. The main question for the research is; How
can employers reduce the occurrence of unnecessary absenteeism in their workplace in a cost effective manner? It is known that employees may take time off of work
for a number of reasons, some of which may be valid, such as illness and family emergency, but there are also many occasions when employees may take time off that
is not essential. When assessing how employers can minimise the problem of absenteeism by reducing its occurrence it is necessary to look at this from two directions, first looking at
why employees may choose to take time off and secondly at the way employers may impact on that decision and reduce the likelihood that employees will opt to take unnecessary
