• Research Paper on:
How to Better Use Our Workforce

    Number of Pages: 5

    Summary of the research paper:

A 5 page proposal discussing alternatives to a company's current 5-day, 40-hour workweek. The paper discusses the experiences and findings of some other organizations, and concludes that flexible schedules and telecommuting would best fit the company's current needs. Further options such as flexible paid time off are mentioned as future alternatives. Job sharing is discussed, but is seen as something belonging more to the early days of changing schedules. Job sharing requires close planning on the part of the manager and the involved employees; the paper concludes that simply using a variety of part-time workers is a better alternative to job sharing. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

as long as there have been jobs, but todays world presents circumstances that have never been seen together before. Increased globalization and increasing competition at every level have worked  to form the scenario in which businesses must operate as efficiently as possible. Part of that efficiency is gaining the most from every employee, of whom there generally are  fewer numbers that in times past. Not only are organizations forced to accomplish more with fewer people, those people also have increasingly complex lives.  In times past, the attitude was that work concerns belonged at the fore of all; personal concerns were always to occupy the background of employees consciousness. Those  unwilling or unable to fully commit their lives to their company were those who were unlikely to advance to higher levels. In recent  years, however, business has discovered that in many cases, the multi-faceted employee with interests outside those only of work frequently is the most creative and innovative on the job.  Their interests prevent them from becoming "stale," giving them different perspectives on many of their at-work responsibilities as well as providing personal spark that otherwise could be extinguished were they  willing to concentrate only on their jobs to the exclusion of all else. When only the largest of the worlds businesses were international,  it made good sense for everyone to work uniform schedules. All that needed to be taken into account was the different time zones within the country. For non-manufacturing  jobs, it was more convenient for the organization to have all its workers present during the same hours and on the same days.
