The precise manner in which a grant is written (and the types of  material that it will include) will vary, of course, in accordance with the requirements of the particular funding organization to which you are applying (Jones and Bundy, 2004). The  Congressional Research Service (2004) emphasizes that there are significant differences in application and award procedures out there:  "Federal agencies and large foundations may have formal application packets, strict guidelines, and fixed deadlines with which applicants must comply, while smaller foundations may operate more informally and  provide a greater measure of assistance to inexperienced grant seekers". The first step in  the grant writing process, therefore, is acquiring the organizations guidelines for grant application. Carefully read these documents making notes as necessary. Then reread them and determine what portion  of their requirements you will attempt to complete first. Choosing one section of the grant at a time to work on  will allow you to break the job into manageable chunks. Make sure, of course, that you address each section in its entirety. Much of the grant writing process  involves the provision of proper contact information and the like. While this may seem obvious, leaving out a period in a web site address or omitting some other tiny  yet critical detail could mean the difference between being approved for the grant or being denied. Breaking the application process into small components will optimize your ability to concentrate
