    Human Rights: Case Study

    Number of Pages: 5

    Summary of the research paper:

5 pages in length. Billy, a former Golf Masters Champion and celebrity interviewer for Channel 9, discovered that the Daily Gossip is planning to publish an article in its Sunday edition that claims he enjoyed "sexual pleasures" with two lap dancers at a London club in January 2002. Concerned the story will upset his six-year-old son from his former marriage to Linda, he claims that since he is single and a minor celebrity there is no public interest in the claims of the Daily Gossip. However, Alf, Billy's public relation manager and agent, just informed him that the Daily Gossip paid £50.00 to Janie, Billy's ex-lover, for her exclusive interview where she will allege that Billy drinks excessively. This news distresses Billy a great deal and has him concerned about his reputation, inasmuch as he just appeared in a government-sponsored advertisement advising young people of the dangers of alcohol. Billy's reputation is on the line; along with feeling betrayed by those closest to him, he also must consider the validity of such claims and what they will most likely do to both his personal and professional life. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

that claims he enjoyed "sexual pleasures" with two lap dancers at a London club in January 2002. Concerned the story will upset his six-year-old son from his former marriage  to Linda, he claims that since he is single and a minor celebrity there is no public interest in the claims of the Daily Gossip. However, Alf, Billys public  relation manager and agent, just informed him that the Daily Gossip paid ?50.00 to Janie, Billys ex-lover, for her exclusive interview where she will allege that Billy drinks excessively.  This news distresses Billy a great deal and has him concerned about his reputation, inasmuch as he just appeared in a government-sponsored advertisement advising young people of the dangers of  alcohol. Billys reputation is on the line; along with feeling betrayed by those closest to him, he also must consider the validity of such claims and what they will most  likely do to both his personal and professional life. Whether or not Billy can take action to stop the stories from reaching print is not necessarily in his favor,  inasmuch as the accusations appear to be true. If the allegations were completely fabricated for no other reason than to sell issues, Billy would certainly have a stronger case  against the Daily Gossip; however, because freedom of the press protects the publications rights, Billy will have a difficult time disputing its printing the accounts. When the student considers whether  or not the Daily Gossip has the right to publish these stories, it will be important to discuss issues pertaining to censorship and the media. The right to interpret  the written word is one of the fundamental freedoms of most civilized societies, yet more and more this right is being threatened for those publications that choose to print issues
