Kahlo was as simple as she was complex; the lucid and uncomplicated images she created with her seemingly elementary style were anything but; in fact, the complexity that resides within  her characteristically simple artistic renderings, which demonstrate a purity and precision like no other, are known only to those who can see beyond their fa?ade. Attention to outer detail  and an unquenchable desire to portray her inner pain, Kahlo favored a more simplistic approach to symbolically convey the immense pain and suffering she endured throughout her life. Utilizing  the duality of surrealism and imagism, the troubled Mexican artist cleverly and quite appropriately captured her audience with images of her own personal anguish through such pieces as the 1937  Self-Portrait With Bed, which is "symbolic of Kahlos pathos" (Diego, Kahlo Art). Sitting on a bench "alongside a creepy, pot-bellied baby doll" (Frida  Icon), the artist portrays herself in yet another abstract representation of reality, in that both her marriage and ability to have children were severely impaired. An accident as a  teen left her crippled and without the ability to procreate, while her famous artist husband - Diego Rivera - found it a difficult challenge to remain sexually faithful to his  wife. These tremendous setbacks, including the reality of being bisexual in a patriarchal society, formulated the foundation of dissatisfaction Kahlo experienced throughout her entire life; until her death in  1954, the Mexican artist knew no other way to express her pain than by way of her artistic talent. Self-Portrait With Bed  reflects societal attitudes at the time about the female image by illustrating how unyielding social dictates were concerning gender equity.
