    just as strongly about their position as those who believe gun control is the only answer for a safer, less-violent society.  In recent years this issue has been brought even closer to the forefront as violence among children and teens has been on the rise and has, quite often, involved the  use of guns. Who can forget Columbine when two students open fired on numerous other classmates and then turned their guns on themselves. This scene drove fear into  the hearts of many and further emphasized the point which gun-control proponents make. Those who believe in gun control site these incidents  as evidence of their point that if gun control laws were in effect then these children would have been unable to gain access to guns, and therefore would have been  unable to carry through with the violence which occurred in their wake. Those opposed to gun control say that these incidents would have happened anyway, that the real problem  lies in the intent of the user. While intent surely does play a role, it is apparent that gun control  would indeed reduce the number of deaths due to guns and would eliminate much of the violence in this country. In order to fully understand this, it is important  to understand both sides of this argument. The Case for the Right to Bear Arms Those who believe that Americans should have  the right to bear arms generally site the constitution which supposedly makes this right possible (Fiorino, 2002).
