One of the ways in which economic development, industrialisation and environmental concerns can be
addressed is through the concept of sustainable development, since this is a methodology which works towards the furtherance of a regions economic development, through increased industrialisation in some cases, whilst
at the same time having regard for environmental maintenance.
The idea of sustainability is one which has been explored and developed considerably in recent years, mainly as a result of concerns regarding the way in
which economic growth interacts with the environment. For example, although developing countries tend to emulate the manufacturing and production capacities of larger nations, it is not necessarily practical for such
levels of industrialisation to be extended globally.
However, it is increasingly becoming obvious that there is a need to raise the living standards and improve the domestic economies of less affluent countries
and therefore it is essential to find ways of achieving these ends without massive increases in industrialisation and the associated environmental damage which accompanies it. The Peoples Commission for the
Environment and Development in India (2001) point out that understanding the balance between the need for economic growth and the need to preserve the environment is paramount: nations which are
