    that meant for the academic world was if two entrance candidates were equally qualified on all levels, yet one was a minority and the other was white, the minority would  automatically be accepted. There are times, however, when an underqualified minority wins out over a qualified white male just to meet the necessary quota. "Blacks can come into  Berkeley with 900. Why is he going to develop merit? Hed be an idiot to develop merit. I wouldnt" (Anonymous 13A). The reasoning behind this was  that other races were viewed as getting the short end of the stick if they had to compete against Caucasians. However, the preference that has been given to minority  groups has considerably backfired, creating an unfavorable climate of white male prejudice (Chang PG). II. REVERSE DISCRIMINATION The real life application of affirmative action is anything but what it  was originally designed to address. Double standards are prevalent throughout educational institutions as minority groups have been instrumental in taking advantage of a system that was supposed to offset  racial discrimination, not make it worse from the other direction. "Schools and companies alike set double standards on who they will accept and who they will reject, depending on  race" (Chang PG). Critics of affirmative action contend that the entire program was misguided from the start. It can be effectively argued that the very groups targeted to  benefit from affirmative action are no longer the ones that need protection; instead, the direction has changed so much that white males are now looked upon as minorities in the  educational sense. Studies have shown that just because a minority has gained entrance into university over that of a white applicant, the opportunity for educational advancement is not fully
