    very interested in conserving energy and in learning about the ecological systems found on earth. Developmentally, this age child is compassionate and believes in the impossible. They have reached the  age when they know pretend from reality and they have also reached the age of realizing they themselves can make a difference. As for using an interdisciplinary approach, we  can refer to Dewey and others who said that we do not live in a world that is segregated into math, writing, reading, science, etc. No, we live in a  world where all the disciplines are mixed up and we must call upon several in any given situation. Using interdisciplinary units has consistently been found to lead children to a  far greater and more comprehensive understanding of the general theme of the lesson. Pennsylvania Standards 4.2.4C - Know natural resources have limited life spans 4.3.4B - Identify how human  actions affect environmental health 4.3.4C - Define and understand extinction 4.8 - Humans and the environment 7.4.3 - Interactions between people and places 10.2.3 - Healthful living Activities &  Resources for Each Discipline The teacher begins with an introduction to earth day, who originated it, why it is now an international day. Briefly, some facts the teacher would include  in this introduction would include the following. The idea for Earth Day evolved over a period of several years (Nelson, nd). In 1962, Senator Gaylord Nelson introduced a proposal  to identify one day in the year as Earth Day (Nelson, nd). At the urging of Senator Nelson, President Kennedy made a five-day tour discussing environmental issues (Nelson, nd). Senator  Nelson traveled through 25 states to speak about environmental issues (Nelson, nd). Nelson initiated a grassroots movement on behalf of the environment; it was to be called Earth Day and
