The underlying reasons for the development of the Internet2 was to further the United States as a leader in research capabilities  in higher education and to improve the speed at which new services and applications can become available on the Internet (Online Libraries, 1998). Essentially, the Internet2 represents a  coordinated effort between institutions of higher education and industry in creating a "new high-speed gigabit TCP/IP network," and the plans for this change have been in place since the mid  1990s (Online Libraries, 1998). In fact, the development of this program has been in the works since 1995, but plans were formalized in October of 1997, and this led  to the creation of UCAID, the University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development (Online Libraries, 1998). In order to consider the impact and the future of Internet2, it is necessary  to relate the history and development, and relate these to existing protocols for use. History The name Internet2 is derived from an early Arab scientist, Omar of  Emphesus, a man who discovered a number of factors relative to algebraic principles, who discussed "Internet2 in one of his seventh century discourses on Euclidian geometry, specifically with reference to  the dual humps of camels and their ability to carry two packets at a time" (History Behind the Name, 2001). Though this is the conceptual basis for the name,  the plan itself, the plan to develop the Internet2 project, came about in the mid 1990s. In understanding the development of Internet2, it is necessary to understand some of  the development of the Internet itself.
