    commercial world is full of competing needs, with a credit crunch, a decline in the aggregate demand for goods and a projected slow recovery may firms have had to find  way to cut costs and increase efficiency as well as support that sales. There is a general perception that policies aligned with the idea of corporate social responsibility (CSR) have  a financial cost to implement, whereas other firms such as Seventh Generation in the Body Shop have seen CSR as a way of differentiating themselves from the competition. With many  firms under threat and financial pressures in place it may be argued that firms ay not see an increasing level of CSR as a viable strategy during a recession and  recovery. 1.1 Research Question The question that the research will aim to answer is to assess whether or not increasing the  level of corporate social reasonability polices within a commercial organization during a recession and/or recovery is a viable or advisable strategy. In order to assess this the following aims will  be met * To define what it mean by corporate social responsibility and the way it may be interpreted or practiced in the commercial environment * To identify relevant theoretical  models that may be used to assess CSR practices. * To assess the direct ad indirect advantages and benefits of CSR, and how they may be achieved * To  assess the direct and indirect disadvantages and costs associated with CSR, and how they are incurred as well as any potential mitigating strategies. * To identify cases where there  has been a change in CSR levels during the recession or recovery and assess the outcome * To assess the general perceptions of CSR by businesses managers and shareholders to
