Since then, its adherents have been, unfortunately and inaccurately, characterized  as nationalistic zealots who wish to obliterate all other religions except Islam. The traditional Muslim beliefs emphasize equality and peaceful coexistence, not murder and acts of terrorism. Its  origins are deeply rooted in what was once simply known as Arabia and began with Muhammad (born in 570 A.D.), a prophet who claimed he had been called to preach  faith and allegiance in Allah (the one true God) to the Arab people (Fellows, 1979). His first religious community (umma) was organized in Medina, but was later moved to  Mecca, which still serves as the Muslim holy city (Lampman, 2001; Fellows, 1979). By the time of his death in 532, the religion nearly all of the Arab world  had converted to Islam, and the sect had grown to an impressive 500,000 members (Fellows, 1979). The militant caliph sect introduced the Muslim religion to Africa, Asia and Europe  (Fellows, 1979), and it was through the transfer of African slaves to America that the popular religion found its way to the continent of North America. While the Muslim religion  has experienced much upheaval during the past few centuries, the basic traditions have remained surprisingly uniform, based primarily upon the five articles of faith. First, there is only one  Allah (God), who is the creator and final judge of man. Allah is separate and distinct from all else, and Muslims believe His true essence is "unknowable" (Lampman, 2001,  p. 18).
