"Nice" people dont perpetrate rape and "nice" people certainly arent its victims, right? Wrong. "Nice" people do rape and "nice" people are raped - every day.  The statistics are starling. What is date rape? The term date rape is defined as: Being subjected to unwanted sexual intercourse, oral sex, anal sex, or  other sexual contact through the use of force or threat of force. Unsuccessful attempts are also subsumed within the term "rape." Sexual coercion is defined as unwanted sexual intercourse, or  any other sexual contact subsequent to the use of menacing verbal pressure or misuse of authority (Curtis, 2002). Rape isnt about  lack of control or miscommunication, rather rape is an act of violence (Rape 101, 2002). In order to understand the scope of the problem it is important to understand  the mentality which precipitates such events. Generally, it is women who are the victims of date rape (Teens and Date Rape, 2002). "Although things are changing, society still  frequently encourages men to be competitive and aggressive and teaches women to be passive and avoid confrontation" (Teens and Date Rape, 2002). These beliefs are exactly the type which  allow a date rape to happen in the first place (Teens and Date Rape, 2002). Many people, especially young adults, dont feel comfortable talking openly about sex (Teens and Date  Rape, 2002). Furthermore, men often misunderstand women, and believe that if she says "no" she really means "yes" (Teens and Date Rape, 2002, See also Men: Preventing Date  Rape, 2002). Still others believe that buying a woman dinner or gifts gives him the "right" to have sex with her (Teens and Date Rape, 2002, See also Men:
