were published in English between 1970 and June of 2006, which all data evaluated to be of good quality. Ten themes were identified, which included three intersecting concepts: enacted vocation,
skilled practice and wisdom. The researchers conclude that their results provides a first step in developing a theory of expert intrapartum nurse=delivered maternity care. By optimizing the areas of practice
identified, it may be possible to improve care for mothers and newborns. Zangaro and Soeken (2007) conducted a meta-analysis of quantitative studies designed to determine the factors associated with
nursing job satisfaction. The quality of the evidence generated by the 31 studies examined was good, indicating a strong correlation between job satisfaction and job stress (ES=-.43), as well as
nurse-physician collaboration (ES=.37) and autonomy (ES=.30). By addressing these factors, nursing managers and healthcare institutions can improve the nature of the work environment in a manner that increases nursing job
satisfaction, which can aid both in nursing recruitment and in retention of current nursing staff. 2. Qualitative research provides a methodology that aids researchers investigating how individuals and groups
perceive and understand a specific social issues or human problem (Creswell, 2009). Quantitative research provides a means for testing theories pertaining to those problems by "examining the relationship among variables"
(Creswell, 2009, p. 4). Qualitative research is inductive and subjective, while quantitative is deductive and objective. Qualitative research focuses on the individual and how that person understands the issue or
problem under investigation. Quantitative research, in contrast, with its emphasis on remaining objective, is more impersonal and remote. While quantitative research does have its place in nursing research, particularly
in regards to testing one approach to a specific to a procedure over another, in most cases, qualitative research best captures the information that nurses want to know. This is
