Negotiating a second generation Cuban-American identity" it is suggested that being able to cross borders, or having a multiple border identity may be seen as an asset  as opposed to a liability. A student writing on this subject might suggest that this goes to an erosion of nationalism and the idea that supports globalization and a  world without borders. It is an interesting notion as some theorists have always held that nationalism is disastrous. It leads to wars. Robert  Bellah is another author who has a unique take on indivualism and national identity issues. Using Risechs work and Robert Bellahs "Community, Commitment, and Individuality," there do seem to  be pros and cons of negotiating a multiple identity. Still, there are benefits of these complex identities as well as drawbacks. Bellah in a general sense tends to dwell  on philosophic, psychological and religious arguments as opposed to Reisechs more political stance. Bellah condemns individualism but some critics see Bellah as condoning a kind of individualism where isolationism is  fostered. In this particular essay, the author concludes that there is a dialectical relationship for the individual and society. The individual is both a person who is unique in his  own right and a member of society. It seems that individualism as a concept is what is generally bashed but it is  often misunderstood as being an endorsement of hedonism. At the other extreme, collectivism or attention to nationalism, might be construed as too much aligned with the state or interests that  go beyond the individual. A student discussing individualism might want to use an example to illustrate what the concept means and why there is so much controversy in its regard.
