to read it merely for the excitement of the whitewater, suspense and intrigue of the men, or the rush of a fast paced plotline it would be enough. But, to
really understand what it is that the writer had in mind, one needs to go below the whitewater, to find the current that drives it all downstream to the inevitable
conclusion. The story starts out with four men who have decided to take a canoe trip down the Cahulawassee River, which is near the Chattahoochee River in Northern Georgia.
The four characters are Lewis (an outdoor kind of guy, rugged and self confident, a weight lifter by hobby), Ed, a sort of in-between kind of guy who wishes that
he were Lewis, Bobby and Drew. Both Bobby and Drew act more as peripheral characters, serving to define the characters of Ed and Lewis.
This rugged piece of mountain town is symbolic of the men who will take a bit of civility with them into the wilderness. At least, they attempt to do
so. A bit of foreshadowing, however, is added in the beginning when Ed says, "There is always something wrong with people in the country" (51). It can also be
said that it eventually becomes the story of the city versus the country. On their first night to make camp, Ed Gentry and Bobby go exploring and run into some
mountaineers who hold them at gunpoint and rape Bobby. Ed, who is about to share the same fate as Bobby is saved as Eds best friend, Lewis comes upon the
scene and kills one of the hillbillys with an arrow from his hunting bow. This complicates the plot in that the other hillbilly escapes, but vows revenge. He manages to
