    pull factors, but these all based on preconceptions rather than the reality. There are several problems that this has created which pose a threat to the company. There are several  issues here, there is the lack of equality in the male and female workforce, with few females ever gaining promotion in the Tokyo plant, the problem of hiring cheap labour  and a long term problem with the labour force that is aging. In Japan there is a very different work culture, these include the expectation of a lifetime employment the  same company which resulted in marginal job mobility and employment stability and a system of promotion based on seniority (Sakakibara et al, 1993). With many females taking breaks from the  work place to have children this interrupts their promotion progress and as such puts them behind the males. The culture is also one which is patriarchal and as such female  rights have not be high on the agenda and there is a greatr deal of sexist behaviour. This also explains the difficulty  in gaining good qualified labour due to lower mobility levels and loyalty to an employer which is seen as a desirable quality in an employee. Many other companies form alliances  with schools, universities and parents are an important factor in the search for a job and selection criteria. Once a job had been found culture dictates that the status of  the position would be more important than the salary which accompanied it (Sakakibara et al, 1993). The approach has to be initially  to understand the cultural difference and realise what this means so that there can be an adjustment to meet the local needs at the same time and the holistic needs
