    Bits of Wood, as does the theme of reconciling traditional African values with the values and technologies of the West. The ways in which the journeys to this golden  mean are both similar and different speaks to the inherent drive for freedom that is achieved only through the endless parade of progression.  The epic march to Dakkar in Ousmanes Gods Bits of Wood illustrates the extent to which the people of this community are willing to go in order to fight for  liberation. That the vast majority is somehow interwoven with the railroad gives an even greater meaning to the aspect of journey because to them, the railroad represents a never-ending  pathway toward freedom. The people of Sengal have forever been in search of spiritual peace and personal fulfillment; however, religious, economic and social obstacles have historically plagued this quest,  proving time and time again to thwart such desires. As a means by which to uncover what they believe to be their inherent due, they seek it out by  journey. Indeed, one can readily argue that this enduring progression is pursued in order to achieve human development; in spite of significant obstacles, the people maintain their stalwart conviction  to ultimately seek out a better existence. Kanes Ambiguous Adventure shares much of its journey meaning with Ousmanes Gods Bits of Wood, however,  the most significant difference is that one person embarks upon the journey in Kanes story, while an entire community makes the trek in Ousmanes tale. The young vision of  hope is sent on his way to discover a new world for him and his people. Indeed, the youthful African harbors visions of a wonderful society where people await
