    of knowledge management receives a lot of attention and smacks of being just another management fad designed to keep consultants in business just a few months longer. The reality  is that the movement toward greater useful organizational knowledge promises to be a matter of - if not survival - than at minimum greater competitive advantage. As competition continues  to intensify with no end in sight, knowledge management is a truly valuable tool that organizations cannot afford to ignore. The conclusion that  has come to be accepted as valid is that innovation is a crucial component of organizational success in todays business climate. But is that a valid stance? Should  we seek to take on faith that innovation and creativity are essential in todays market? Business is more competitive today than at any other time, and organizations cannot afford  to make mistakes in their strategies for the future. Of course creativity is desirable in any venture, but managers must have some assurance that pursuing it at any cost  is a necessary activity, and one worth the cost. Creativity and Innovation In effect, what  we have in pursuing innovation is a combination of Peters controlled chaos, a firm grasp on strategic planning, the ability to see opportunity when it arises, and a corporate willingness  to take on the risk of innovation in a time when one of the goals of corporate management is to minimize risk to the greatest extent possible.  Innovation does involve risk, but Peter Drucker (1998) points out that few concepts, assumptions or mores survive for decades at a time.
