"New World" would not be without its casualties. Both life and culture were at risk as the Spaniards and other European cultures made their foray into the Americas.  Indeed, colonial rule was difficult for the indigenous peoples who fell under that rule. Basically the world became divided into colonist verses the colonized. In Latin America Indians,  slaves, castas, and women were all impacted by the harsh expectation of the Spanish lords who invaded their lands. These peoples would not give their independence and freedom without  a fight, however. Indeed, various factions rose up to resist the Spanish. Sometimes that resistance occurred through force and sometimes it was more subtle. The common goal,  however, was to retain what they could of their individuality and culture, to stand up to the Spanish, to resist their attempts to domineer them, and hopefully even drive them  from the lands which rightly belonged to the peoples of the Americas. Spain and Portugal were the first nations to reach the shores  of the "New World". Their arrival preceded that of France by a century and consequently they had much time during which the Natives of the new land were essentially  at their disposal. The colonized what was then considered the most desirable lands, conquering one Native cultural group after another and exploiting both them and the natural resources the  lands had to offer. The Spanish and Portuguese concentrated their activities in the Americas mostly in Latin America. The Latin American  peoples were put into slavery and servitude in many cases and in others they were forced to provide trade goods to the marauders in return for trinkets and other items
