    them to hire African Americans, or by forcing them to allow African Americans into white schools people assume that the ideas and the ignorance associated with racism will change. But,  the truth is that such racism will never go away with the enforcement of law. Changing laws does not change racism. It may divert it to a more subtle social  level, but it does nothing to educate and change the social injustices that take place. This is something easily seen in a great deal of literature, especially "To Kill a  Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. In this particular book we see a family who is morally and socially just and a society that anything but just. This story serves to illustrate  that even in the face of undeniable proof, the people who are racist will remain so regardless of legal intervention. In the following paper we examine the story as it  relates to social injustice. The paper then illustrates supportive realities regarding racism and injustice. To Kill a Mockingbird and Social Injustice In this particular story we are presented  with a lawyer who is defending an African American male accused of raping a white woman. He has not raped her and the marks upon her face are actually from  her father who has beaten her for having a relationship with this Black man. The lawyer, Atticus, is tormented, as are his children, for being involved in the case. The  people are incredibly racist and will never see beyond these beliefs. The power of their racist position is clearly defined when we see how Atticus proves that Tom Robinson  is innocent of the charges. Atticus is able to prove that the marks are not from Tom and that the girls family is to blame, especially considering he has proven
