or is he concerned about a missing intern? Did President Clinton provide pardons because he believed the actors deserve to be pardoned, or did he do it to cement future  deals? What are the real motivations of politicians and how do they affect both international and domestic relations? While many agree that there are a variety of factors which motivate  politicians-and some certainly pertain to career-there are schools of thought that go above and beyond individual achievement and motivation and go to reasons behind important political decision making. One might  use the example of whether or not China should be allowed MFN status. A question like that requires contemplation, but politicians who subscribe to Liberal IR theory, and those who  favor realism will likely reach different conclusions. The former might say that China is granted MFN due to the fact that everyone is making money whereas the realist might say  that while that is the case, allowing it to continue would be wrong for the world as it sanctions human rights violations. It is of course hard to say  what conclusion each member of a particular party or philosophy will come to, as every theory may be applied in a myriad of ways. In looking at Liberal IR theory  and Realism, a student writing on this subject will be able to see the significant differences. In brief, Liberal IR Theory suggests that there are agendas that governments will obtain  through virtue of the system and Realism sees the world as at least having the potential of fairness and resolution.
