According to Buckland, no one wrote more unevenly than Jack London and as a writer, he was sometimes awkward (420). At other times, he was quite effective (420).  He has a tendency to explain and re-explain a particular point as well as and to force a current sociological issue (420). London exaggerates, and makes his points. Sometimes,  the repetitive explanation is necessary for the reader to get the full impact of the story, such as in the Alaskan stories (420). One infamous work of Londons  that demonstrates irony as well as to make good use of setting is "To Build a Fire." In "To Build a Fire,"  Jack London addresses themes of man against nature. He writes about a situation in the wilderness where there is deadly cold. Ones life is at stake as the narrator expresses  the fact that a man will actually freeze to death if he cannot get a fire going. The story is one about a man dying of hypothermia and  is quite extraordinary. It presents challenges to the mind and spirit. What would one do in such a situation? Part of the problem  is that the protagonist acts too late. This is particularly true in the story as the threat of frost is not taken very seriously early on. Soon, it becomes just
