    allow the soul to smile. With laughter, we remove stress and heartache from our lives, even if only in a momentary fashion. It is without suspect then  that laughter and its nature has been the object of literary discussion on more than one occasion. It turns out, that laughter has been likened to anything from the  work of the devil himself to music to Gods ears and everything in between. Two such examples of works which address the nature of laughter and comedy would  include Aristotles Poetics and Umberto Ecos The Name of the Rose. Both of these works address the issue of comedy and reveal some very interesting perceptions on this controversial  topic. The Name of the Rose - Laughter and Comedy According to Baskerville and Jorge Aristotles Poetics is first introduced  in The Name of the Rose by Jorge (Essay on The Name of the Rose). When Jorge was a young man, he left the monastery and returned to his  native Spain to secure books for the library (Essay on The Name of the Rose). Aristotles Poetics regarded laughter as the worst heresy, and therefore, Jorge "locked the volume  away in the most inaccessible part of the abbeys labyrinthine library, where it remained for decades" (Essay on The Name of the Rose). Somehow, Berengar, who was the  assistant librarian, found this book (Essay on The Name of the Rose). He later persuaded Adelmo to have sex with him in exchange for the chance to examine the  book which was now shrouded in mystery and intrigue (Essay on The Name of the Rose). Adelmo became overcome with remorse and regret for what he had done and
