The potential efficiencies are not limited to the commercial environment, the public sector and non profit making organisations have many  constraints on resources and may also benefit from the use of information technology to help collect, manage store, analysis and control data flow in an organisation. One type of  programmes used widely is the management information system which may be argued as having a great deal to potential for use in educational establishments in terms of resource use and  the improvement of standards. The DfES has a vision that "essential management information will be routinely held shared and used electronically by all schools to underpin high-quality leadership and learning.  Electronic management information will be part of day-to-day school business and will help raise educational standards". This is an ambitious vision it will take not only the investment in the  physical resources, but also a change in the way existing resources and used as well as training on how the systems can be utilised to create the value. This may  also involve the need for a culture change. The task is difficult, there are many aspects that any school wanting to make this change will have to consider and  plan for. The installation and technical operation as well as the human aspects need to be incorporated into the plan. 2. Aims and Methods 2.1 Aims The aim of this paper  is to assess the potential of a management information system for the use in schools with the focus on schools where the system has been installed by may not be  being utilised to give the full potential value.
